Roy HernandezSalsa Dancer / Instructor / ChoreographerBorn and raised in Puerto Rico, Roy moved to Florida in 1996 hoping for a better education. Highly involved in high school, Roy started breakdancing during his junior year. Through this "still-rising style," he acquired a good knowledge and understanding of Hip-Hop. He also acquired quick feet which he uses regularly in his salsa shinework and as a social dancer and performer. Soon after, he took his first salsa class in Gainesville, FL with Salsa Caliente Dance Studios where he learned Casino-Rueda-Style Salsa. Throughout his time with the dance company, Roy studied both L.A. and N.Y. Style Salsa by participating at socials and congresses. He also excelled in Bachata, body isolations and movement, spins, styling, shines, turn patterns and choreography. Between 2005 and 2006, Roy acted as the director of the Savvy Salseros, Salsa Caliente's pro-dance team. With the team, he performed at congresses in Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando where he quickly became recognized. He also performed in Florida for socials such as the BTS December social and Salsa Heat February social. He has been teaching professionally for 2 years, and he is constantly improving as a dancer/choreographer. Having recently relocated to Austin, Roy is currently an engineer (graduated from the University of Florida) and loves to go out dancing at Copa Bar & Grill and Dallas Night Club (early so that it doesn’t conflict with work). He recently won the Jack & Jill Salsa competition at the 1st Annual Soul2Sole Dance event here in Austin. Roy is a very approachable and good-hearted instructor. His humility and passion for teaching Salsa will be a good impact to the Austin scene which is currently growing with the hard work of all the other local instructors. He is excited about new beginnings and expanding horizons within Austin’s salsa community. |
